The artist Nnenna Okore, represented by Behncke Gallery, Munich, is the subject of a recent interview in the online magazine Art Currently. Internationally acclaimed for her large-scale sculptural installations, Okore is also represented by October Gallery, London, and Jenkins Johnson Gallery, San Francisco. In the interview, she reflects on her artistic practice, cultural identity, sustainability, and the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
A central focus of the conversation is her current exhibition Between Earth and Sky, which has traveled from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London to the Textile Museum Augsburg. Inspired by the botanical collections and environments of Kew Gardens, the exhibition features immersive installations that explore ecological interconnectedness, environmental responsibility, and the profound relationship between people and nature.
Known for her use of organic and often recycled materials, Okore creates works that address themes of transformation, community, environmental awareness, and cultural memory. Throughout the interview, she discusses how her experiences living in Nigeria, Australia, and the United States have shaped her artistic perspective and informed her engagement with questions of place, belonging, and sustainability.
Behncke Gallery is delighted to see Nnenna Okore’s work receiving continued international recognition. The interview offers valuable insights into the thinking and creative process of an artist whose practice contributes significantly to contemporary discussions surrounding ecology, materiality, and social engagement.
