Chamberlain Piece
Contemporary art at the Local History Museum
In Luisa Baldhuber’s works, worlds of perception merge; spaces are woven together with light, projections or digital images to form a sensory tapestry. This is also the case in the site-specific installation in the chamber of the historic Lochmannhaus. The work takes its starting point from mobile phone photographs taken by the artist during excursions to Lake Starnberg – moments of landscape, nature, water, sky and light. The title, too, refers to the lake, as this mythical and seemingly foreign-sounding word is one possible interpretation of a handwritten label for Lake Starnberg on a centuries-old map. The photographs give rise to digital paintings in which the original motifs can now only be glimpsed. Reality recedes, opening up an artistic pictorial space that is constantly transformed by the shifting hues of light. The lake literally ‘flows’ into the chamber. The pictorial surfaces fit perfectly into the small space and seem to extend it organically. The artwork envelops visitors in an almost meditative connection between the inner and outer worlds.
As the intimate play begins, the small space expands once more – Munich-based sound artist Ophelia Flassig brings the building to life with sound. In her sound suit, with microphones attached to her hands and feet, she captures the sounds of the present moment, as an echo of the centuries. She makes floorboards, boilers and beams resonate, layering the resonances live into sound loops and weaving them together with the water. The Lochmannhaus and the lake come together in a Bavarian ‘Hoagascht’ – a free harmony and shared vibration – a work of sound art created in the moment.
