Lukas Liese
Lukas Liese was born in Munich in 1991. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2010.
"In my artistic work, stone is my preferred material, as its presence in space, its geological characteristics and its significance in art and cultural history give it the potential to build up an interaction between content and material in my works. To this end, I work with digital tools or chemicals in addition to the "classic" tools of stone sculpture. Both are used in my sculptures as well as in my reliefs, where I etch the digitally created motifs into marble blocks and slabs using a process I developed myself. In terms of content, I deal with a wide variety of social issues and phenomena and try to balance them with the material and do justice to both."

The “On Route” edition shows a screenshot navigation route that leads to a quarry on Monte Altissimo near Pietrasanta, not far from Carrara. Michelangelo had this quarry built in the 16th century, because he believed, that marble would be of the best quality here. Michelangelo himself planned the road, that leads to this quarry - it has been preserved to this day, the last section is now a hiking trail. With “On Route” I would like to shine a spotlight on Michelangelo’s engineering achievements, which are often overlooked behind his art. The thoughts he gave about the locations of new quarries, efficient road layouts, and the statics of bridges and tunnels gave rise to industrialized marble mining as early as the 16th century, which continues to shape the region around Carrara to this day. With the reliefs from the “On Route” edition, I embark on an artistic search for traces of Michelangelo’s quarry. To do this, I explored the route shown during a work trip, using Googlemaps as a digital tool and his quarry as the destination. On the way, I repeatedly took screenshots of the navigation route on my cell phone with my location and the “digital” view of the destination. In this limited edition of 15 unique pieces you can follow the location point as you hike along Monte Altissimo on the way to your destination up to Michelangelo's quarry. I transferred the motif with acid onto marble slabs, which I cut into the shape of my cell phone.

He studied sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 2019 he graduated as a "Meisterschüler" of Prof. Else Gabriel and has been working as an artist since then. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Among others, in the Uferhallen Berlin, Bärenzwinger Berlin, Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, Warte für Kunst in Kassel or Galerie Mazzoli Berlin. He has also curated several group exhibitions, including in the Berlin exhibition spaces Spoiler and Zentrale. For his work, he has been awarded, among others, the Deutschlandstipendium (2017), the Mart Stam Prize (2018), the Elsa Neumann Fellowship of the State of Berlin (2020), the Inside Art Fellowship of Artists Inside (2020) and the Neustart Plus Fellowship of the Stiftung Kunstfonds (2023).
