Charmaine Poh works at the intersection of video, photography and performance.

‘The Moon is Wet #3’ is a still from the video installation of the same name and depicts the sea goddess Mazu at a loom facing the sea. Mazu is based on the historical figure Lin Moniang, who, according to legend, acted upon a dream to save her family’s lives. In the video work, the loom at which she sat whilst her father and brothers were in distress at sea becomes a symbol of fate and the connection between the past, present and future.

In the video installation ‘The Moon is Wet’, Poh links Mazu’s narrative with the life stories of migrant women in Singapore. The focus is on women who have left their homelands to secure a livelihood in a foreign land and build a new life. Set against the backdrop of a changing coastal landscape, the video installation explores migration, memory, loss and solidarity. The motif of water alludes to the close intertwining of nature, labour and social change, whilst simultaneously offering a perspective on renewal and the future.
