"Metamorphoses – Young Brazilian Art"
Beatrice Arraes, Arrudas, Gustavo Diógenes, Caio Marcolini
Four perspectives, one movement:
Featuring Beatrice Arraes, Arrudas, Gustavo Diógenes and Caio Marcolini, the exhibition brings together four voices from the young Brazilian art scene in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, whose works explore transformation – in form, material and meaning. Beatrice Arraes has recently attracted international attention with her US debut exhibition in Los Angeles and her current exhibitions in New York. In her oil paintings, she translates the changing landscapes of her north-eastern Brazilian homeland into magical-realist visual worlds that lie somewhere between memory and inner topography. Her painting connects with memories and the innermost self by utilising the space between the moment and memory, between clarity and blurriness. Gustavo Diógenes, a leading figure in Fortaleza's art scene and an important mentor to the younger generation of artists, expands the dialogue through his own painterly and object-based practices, which explore origins, identity and new beginnings. Diógenes's works are characterised by slowed-down sense of time, transforming everyday scenes into images that are simultaneously imbued with a sense of rootedness and a feeling of alienation. Arrudas, the youngest of the artists, employs a style of fantastical realism and combines oil paintings with ceramic sculptures, using symbols such as wallpaper, birds and insects to explore the human psyche.
The exhibition ‘Metamorphoses’, organised in collaboration with the Leonardo Leal Gallery in Fortaleza and with the support of the Vilsmeier-Linhares Collection in Munich, presents four artists to watch out for.
