Gustavo Diógenes (born in 1983 in Fortaleza, Brazil; lives and works in his hometown of Fortaleza, Brazil) studied painting at the Instituto Federal do Ceará and printmaking (lithography, metal engraving and woodcut) at the Thomaz Pompeu Sobrinho School of Art and Crafts.
Gustavo Diógenes develops his practice in painting and printmaking based on a careful observation of the urban landscape in the far north-east of Brazil, particularly the Sertão region of Ceará and its changing landscapes. On his canvases, the city appears imbued with an atmosphere of uncertainty and melancholy, created by scenes set at night or at twilight, in which street lamps, motorbikes, abandoned cars, roadside bars and wasteland replace the traditional motifs of the north-eastern landscape. The artist thus creates an iconography characterised by the juxtaposition of urban sprawl and the persistence of a folkloric and vernacular dimension of the Sertão.
Diógenes, who originally trained in the graphic arts, developed a style of painting characterised by great compositional rigour, in which light plays a structuring role. The interplay of light and shadow creates quiet, airy spaces in which artificial light generates ambiguous zones between visibility and concealment. A sense of slowed-down time pervades his works, transforming everyday scenes into images imbued with memory and a sense of alienation. The recurring motif of streets, petrol stations and transit spaces brings his artistic exploration close to a particular tradition of contemporary Brazilian cinema, particularly films such as *O céu de Suely* and *Viajo porque preciso, volto porque te amo*, in which the hinterland appears as a melancholic and existential terrain.
His experience with etching also has a decisive influence on his pictorial composition. His interest in the material, in stains and in the areas of ambiguity within the image creates surfaces on which the painting seems to waver between appearing and disappearing. Diógenes’ landscapes do not reveal themselves fully to the viewer. They are compositions that preserve emptiness, silence and mystery as constituent elements of the image, inviting the viewer to fully immerse themselves in these spaces of solitude and strangeness.
Diógenes’ first solo exhibition, “Fogo Fátuo”, took place at the Leonardo Leal Gallery in Fortaleza (2023). Two years later, his second solo exhibition, “Silêncio em Notas Ocres”, followed at the Bianca Boeckel Gallery in São Paulo (2025). He has also taken part in various group exhibitions, the most recent of which include: “Vaquejada da meianoite” at the Galeria Almeida & Dale in São Paulo (2025) and “Fogo corredor” at Portas Vilaseca in Rio de Janeiro (2025).
